Training
First and foremost we strongly
encourage every dog owner to train their dogs whether with us or
with any other training program that uses humane methods! In
addition to being much easier to live with a trained dog is a
happier and safer companion. Many wonderful pets are destroyed
every day due to "behavior
problems" that could have
been avoided or easily corrected with just minimal training and
common sense! Responsible owners train their DOGS! Through
training you learn to communicate and to motivate your dog,
forming a bond that lasts a lifetime. All of our courses are
designed to help you meet your training goals, whether its a
well-mannered family pet or a titled show dog. We'll be there
every step of the way. We offer:
The Puppy Headstart Program
(for pups 8-16 weeks of age)
no pre-requisite required.
Give your pup a
headstart in life. Start him off correctly. This course covers
proper socialization with people and other pets, proper
nutrition, and what foods, treats, toys and appropriate games
that will help with future training. We cover vet and groomer
visits and how to prepare your pup. We introduce the pup to
leash and collar and a few basic obedience commands. We cover
problems (and how to avoid them) such as nipping, jumping on
people, chewing, crate training, and much much more. This class
meets for 5 weeks and each class lasts approximately 1½ hours.
Includes the book Leader of the Pack and a new puppy kit.
Cost: $75.
Classes start on 15
February 2005.
Home Manners I (for dogs
16 weeks and up)
no pre-requisite required.
This should be the minimum
training for any responsible dog owner! No frills - just basic
manners to live in our world. This course opens the lines of
communication between dog and owner through positive motivational
training. Our part is to learn how to become our dogs "best
friend" and to "read" our dog. His lessons include:
- Walking quietly on loose leads
- Coming when called (the first time)
- Sit
- Down (lie down)
- Off (get off you or the furniture)
- Leave it (leave something alone)
- Out or Give (to release an object from his mouth)
- Sit quietly when greeting someone
- Wait (at doors, stairs, or getting in or out of vehicles)

- Break (release word)
and much more, such as teaching you how to do:
- Basic nail trims
- Ear cleaning
- Bathing
- Brushing
Course lasts 6
weeks and meets twice a week, and includes the book Leader of
the Pack. Cost: $160.
Home Manners II (for dogs
6 months and up)
pre-requisite: Home Manners I.
This is advanced home manners
where we take Fido to a much more controlled level. We cover:
- Heeling (walking closely beside your left leg - when more control is
required such
as walking through crowds or during vet visits)
- Heeling off lead (dog walks beside you without a leash)

- Speak (getting dog to bark on command)
- Quiet (getting dog to stop barking)
- Stays (sit stay and down stays for brief periods)
- Find it (look for a hidden object)
- Carry (to carry a newspaper or mail while walking beside you)
- Place (to go to a certain spot and lie down quietly, such as when you are eating a meal)
This class lasts 8 weeks. Cost: $150.
Pre Novice Classes (for dogs 16 weeks and up)
Puppy Headstart recommended, but not required.
This course is for
those who may wish to show in obedience, agility, flyball, etc. or
those owners who just wish to have more precise control. At the
end of this class you will go through a mock pre-novice show class
and you will test for your AKC Canine Good Citizenship Certificate
(which is an officially recognized title that goes with your dog
for his lifetime!). Material covered includes:
-
Watch
- Heeling on leash
- Sit down
- Stand
- Stays at the sit
- Down and stand positions
- Recall (come)
- Finish (go back to heel position from a sit in front of you)
plus many of the
things taught in Basic Home Manners. This class is much more in
depth than the "Manners" classes and thus meets only
once a week for 11 weeks, as more practice is required between new
exercises. Includes Leader of the Pack book, training
leash, and cost of the AKC Canine Good Citizenship test (a $15
value). Cost: $165.
